Kira Dunton as a poet.
Influenced by poets such as Ross Gay and Janine Hall Gailey, my work presents a form of escape through looking, asking my readers to bear witness to ikea furniture, middle school playgrounds, and fourth walls—all in an attempt to find the freedom that comes when we truly see one another. My poems were selected for presentation at the Student Scholar’s Symposium at Lipscomb University in 2017 and 2018. I have also been invited to present my work at the graduate level at the 2018 Pop Culture Association Conference in Indianapolis, IN, and again in Washington DC in 2019 alongside other artists including Kaveh Akbar and Adrian Matejka.
